I try to stay away from wearing too much black but there’s no denying the importance of at least one black dress in your wardrobe, especially during the festive season.
A black dress can be styled for work and then with a change of handbag, shoes and lipstick you’ll be ready for a night out with friends or a fancy evening meal. I currently work from a co-working space in the centre of the city, anything that will save me time is always a bonus. A black dress is versatile, timeless and an essential in my wardrobe.
House of Fraser have a really good selection of party dresses. I particularly like lace dresses which is why this one by Yumi* stood out to me (it’s half price at the mo). It’s a skater dress which I find to be very flattering and easy to style. It pinches in at the waist and then floats out across your hips. These types of dresses go down well if you happen to find yourself in a twirling competition. I also like that this dress has short sleeves. I have a terrible habit of wearing cardigans and spoiling dresses but I haven’t felt the need to with this one.
I teamed this dress with a pair of comfortable boots which I wrote about a while back. They give me a little extra height but are easy enough to walk in. Whenever I go out these days I find myself doing a lot of walking. My beautiful high heels are all boxed up and I haven’t worn them for a while. It’s a shame and I do hope I get back to wearing them but for now, it’s comfort first. See, this is the beauty of a black dress. You can wear them with boots and flats for a comfortable but smart look or go for super high heels for a sexy and chic look.
I also grabbed my favourite red handbag which is small and neat but holds my iPhone, Anker and a little make-up – all the important stuff. I have a couple of Michael Kors handbags and they’re all very good quality. I like that they’re structured which means they hold their shape and they don’t get too heavy (no one likes a handbag with a saggy bottom). I carry it on one shoulder but if you want a more casual look or simply want to dance the night away you can throw it over as a cross body.
Do you have a black dress you feel comfortable and happy in? If not, I really do think it’s so important to spend a little time finding the perfect black dress. Be mindful and make sure you’re buying something you feel good in. There’s nothing more wasteful than buying clothes that you don’t feel totally you in – they rarely get used. However, having a go to black dress that will last for years will be so useful.
